The classic car show season is coming to an end this year. Most owners are preparing to mothball their cherished motors for winter but, for others, the hard work is about to begin.
For this is the time of year that many classic car fans buy and sell. Some are looking to move on their classic, or part of their collection, and take on a different model.
Others, and they may be enthusiasts who have never owned or run a classic, aim to join the fun and acquire an old car… and a new hobby.
Winter is a great time to take a classic car off the road and give it some much-deserved maintenance. Some owners will take on a project car to keep them amused on those dark evenings and winter weekends.
They may carry out a full restoration job, ready to put their precious pride and joy back on the road in spring. Or they may have bought a ‘doer-upper’, a classic car that is sound but needs some TLC and mechanical updates.
Whatever the case, or the classic, they are going to have a lot of fun doing the work and even more pleasure when spring comes and they get back on the road.
Ian Robertson, publisher of popular Classic.Retro.Modern. magazine, said: “The practice of never buying a soft-top car when the sun is shining, because the price will be at its highest, holds true for most other classic cars, too.
“Owners will covet their classic cars, put them away for the damp, cold, rainy months, and then release them from storage in the spring, to do any routine maintenance jobs so that they are in tip-top condition for the glorious days of summer, when the days are long and the sun shines for hours on end.
“Classic car experts will be scouring the classifieds at the end of summer and beginning of autumn wanting to pick up a bargain, as values are at their lowest then, while the car isn’t used and stored away,” he explained.
“Prices will rise once again as soon as the weather becomes more pleasant and classic cars become usable again.
“So, if you’re looking for a project, buy now when prices are low and spend the winter months restoring it so that you can make the most of it once the temperatures head skyward.”
