I think you would agree, if you went back even 10 years ago, most small business owners could name their bank manager. You had a dedicated representative who not only understood your business, but you were able to contact them directly, and they would go out of their way to help your business. There was also a time, perhaps a little further back, where you may even have met them for lunch or for a drink – you had a real “relationship”
Today, the way the banks approach businesses has changed dramatically. The feedback we get is that very few SME’s have someone they can contact directly, let alone someone they have a relationship with and who knows their business.
So, what does this mean for SME’s?
Many small businesses are left without the level of support they want; resorting to online livechat or speaking to a centralised call-centre that knows little about your actual business and how they can best serve you. You may be able to arrange to meet someone locally, but you may have to wait some time for an appointment!
This may be sufficient if your business is running smoothly and you just need to tick things along, but what about if your business needs a quick cash boost, or you need to fund a piece of equipment quickly to enable you to complete a job, or sadly things take a turn for the worse? As the last 18 months have shown us all, it’s very difficult to predict what’s around the corner and small businesses can feel left without the assistance they need when you need it most.
