This weekend saw the eagerly-awaited return of the F1 and F2 championships and they certainly didn’t disappoint.
Credo’s involvement with the Attleborough-based UNI-Virtuosi racing team in 2019 coincided with a successful year for Guanyu Zhou, and it looked like being a fabulous start to 2020 as he executed a fantastic strategy to set himself up at the front of the field, starting on pole and establishing a lead after the pitstops shook out. Tragically a technical issue beyond his control sent him to the back of the field and he finished 17th, but notably he proved his speed by setting the fastest lap.
Callum Illot, worked hard and established himself behind his UNI-Virtuosi team-mate having started third, and when trouble hit for Zhou, Ilott pounced and took the lead.
After a late safety car, Ilott again proved the team’s pace by driving into a lead over eight seconds in majestic fashion, as his rivals squabbled behind, unable to match Ilott.
Speaking on UNI-Virtuosi’s website, Ilott was delighted with the result –
“It’s an absolutely brilliant feeling to win my first FIA F2 race. Zhou and I had some great battles at the start and I was maybe over pushing a little but we both still had great pace. A huge thank you to the team who have done such an amazing job so far this weekend, and probably deserved two drivers on the podium, but to come in and win my first race with them is a dream come true.“
Well done Callum on winning the first race, and we are looking forward to another thrilling round this weekend.
